About Me Teaching
I believe that education is one of the most important things in life and so teaching music has been a natural progression of my playing and composing.
Throughout my music career, I’ve been fortunate to have excellent music teachers and so I have learnt, not only music, but also how to teach. I have studied extensively and have a MA degree in Music Performance (Kingston University), BA degree in Music (University of Chichester) and a Diploma of Higher Education in Popular Music Performance (Basstech at the London College of Music).
I began teaching private lessons in London in 1997 on bass guitar, then expanding with the double bass in 2000. Soon after I became a teacher with Hounslow Music Service where I taught double bass and assisted with the running of the orchestra.
I spent 2 years in Hong Kong teaching English as a second language. This experience improved my music teaching as I formally learnt how to teach, including lesson planning, report writing and how to illicit understanding and knowledge in the student.
When I returned to the UK I started teaching privately again, and teaching became my main musical focus. I have a successful teaching practice which has expanded from bass guitar and double bass to music theory, composition, music technology and recording and producing. I have had the delight in teaching many wonderful students and I really enjoy helping and seeing them progress.
I spent 5 years with West Sussex Music Service as a peripatetic instrumental music teacher for double bass and bass guitar. I assisted teaching classes for key stage 2, delivering whole year group lessons on music and learning the guitar. This encompassed being an Ensemble Leader, conducting and leading a music ensemble for adult learners, where I arranged and composed much of the music used.
I am still actively discovering more about music every day – learning is a life-long experience. There is no such thing as an expert - experience combined with a thirst for knowledge and a passion for sharing is essential for teaching.
